Our Review of Symfony Live London 2014

Paul Adamson

Symfony London 2014 was a great success for me. Here’s five points that I took away from the day.

Best talk must go to David Zuelke from Heroku. Although he had little to say about Symfony, he gave a great presentation about the concept of ephemeralization, and how the cloud is impacting this; very inspiring stuff.

The next best highlight was the Oculus Rift at the Reconnix stand. Again, nothing to do with Symfony, but, it was a great conversation starter and a good time was had by all that used it.

The Commerce Guys platform.sh looked very impressive. Personally, I’m settled on a docker implementation powered by puppet, but I can see how the ease of use of platform.sh interface will be well loved by devs who may be lacking the Ops.

Speaking of commerce, there were a few stands present pushing ecommerce solutions. Between the maturity of Commerce for Drupal, and more interest in Symfony based ecommerce products, I’m really hoping this area is going to see a lot of innovation in the future; especially after the last few years of thinking Magento is the one and only option for PHP. The sausage butties for breakfast were great… so full props to the hosts. Great building, excellent food, friendly staff, really helped the day go smoothly.

One point that doesn’t need a bullet was how good it was to be mixing with the wider community, sharing ideas, positive experiences and pain points. As ever, the PHP community still remains one of the friendliest and helpful communities I’ve experienced. Here’s looking forward to next year.

I echo the sentiments of Paul, so, other than repeating them, I shall add:

Most entertaining talk:
Doing Everything with Nothing: Ephemeralization in the Cloud.

Most insightful:
Kris Wallsmith: How Kris Builds Symfony Apps.

Most unassuming which turned out to be very useful
Jakub Zalas : The Dependency Trap.

One with material to consider for the [near] future:
Javier Lopez: One Commit, One Release. Continuously Delivering a Symfony Project.
